The Club

University Club of Boston exterior viewFrom its incorporation in 1891, the Club has had two homes. The first clubhouse was at 270 Beacon Street which was vacated in 1926, when the new clubhouse officially opened at 40 Trinity Place. It was a grand clubhouse, and even though it was the utopia everyone desired, there was a price to be paid eventually. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, many things contributed to the inability to pay debt service. It was the Depression, a time of gasoline rationing, high taxes, and a call to the armed services for many members. The clubhouse was sold in 1962 to the Chandler School for Women, but the club retained its four story athletic building as a means of survival. The new smaller clubhouse required a new entrance at 426 Stuart Street, as well as many upgrades to accommodate the membership. As a result of the leadership of the Club’s officers and directors, as well as better management from 1962 to present, the Club now enjoys a healthy financial position.
